CLARKS SUMMIT -- Dallas Ely scored 28 points Tuesday night as Montrose knocked off Dunmore, 58-48, in a meeting of division champions to determine the Lackawanna League's top seed when the District 2 Class AA playoffs begin Friday night.

Sara Krupinski added 16 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three assists.

The teams met in the same game a year ago when the league's district qualifying tournament made its debut. Dunmore defeated Montrose, 50-38, in that game.

The Meteors produced a different result this time in the meeting between the teams with the two longest winning streaks in the league.

Montrose (20-2) won its 19th straight and brought an end to a 13-game winning streak by Dunmore (21-3).

Dunmore is the six-time defending district champion, but enters the tournament as the league's second seed.

"It's a nice signature win," Montrose coach Al Smith said. "We wanted to play well and we came ready to play, but we realize we have to come ready to play Friday night."

Ely and Krupinski led the way as Montrose scored the game's first 13 points and never trailed. Ely hit two 3-pointers and Krupinski had five points in the fast start.

The closest Dunmore got after that was five points three times in the second half -- twice on Alexa Gerchman 3-pointers and once on a Molly Burke four-point play.

Gerchman finished with 26 points and four steals. She was 6-for-12 from 3-point range.

Burke hit three 3-pointers while scoring 14.

Dunmore plays Friday night at 7:30 against Wyoming Seminary in the district quarterfinals.

Montrose plays Friday at 6 against Holy Cross, which lost to Mid Valley in another game for seeding position and took the fifth spot from the league.

Mid Valley, the league's fourth-seed will play Lake-Lehman Friday at Pittston Area at 6.

The other quarterfinal is at Scranton at 6 when Riverside faces Meyers.
