EDWARDSVILLE ‚?? Over and over again, the shots arced through the air, sailing crisply just beyond Allison Rinehimer‚??s reach.

It was just that kind of day for the Berwick goalkeeper and her teammates.

Scranton Prep pressed the always stingy Bulldog defense to its threshold in a 6-1 victory in the District 2 Class 2A championship Saturday at Wilkes University‚??s Schmidt Stadium. The Classics end the Bulldogs‚?? two-year string of district championships.

Already qualified for the PIAA playoffs, Berwick will face Trinity (Camp Hill), winners of the District 3 title game over Northern York, on Tuesday at a site to be determined in the Harrisburg area.

‚??We still have a game to play,‚?Ě Berwick coach Paul DiPippa. ‚??We‚??re going to have to learn from this.‚?Ě

The Bulldogs began to look sluggish following an unexpected goal scored by Elana Falcone in the fourth minute. Bianca Chairge went around two defenders and lofted a ball over Rinehimer‚??s leaping arms in the 13th minute for a 2-0 lead.

DiPippa said that his team looked unlike one that went undefeated and came into the game with a 17-0 record and a Wyoming Valley Conference championship.

‚??It‚??s not easy,‚?Ě DiPippa stated. ‚??It wasn‚??t our day. We were slow. Basic stuff. And we‚??re very good at the basic stuff.‚?Ě

Berwick had a chance to cut the deficit in half when Kelly Sheptock set up a breakaway opportunity on a 35-yard through ball to Karleigh Hartman in the 24th. Hartman was unable to corral the ball, and Scranton Prep walked away unscathed.

Trailing by five goals, the Bulldogs finally posted a goal when Sheptock headed a ball on a nicely executed corner kick from Hartman in the 48th minute.

Rinehimer finished with seven saves. A pair of well-hit shots by Elana Falcone and Cara Griffith tinged off the cross bar and past Rinehimer in the 33rd and 35th minutes, respectively.
