Mayfieled: PA –February 20, 2020— Many PA residents will learn they have cancer this year and getting to their scheduled treatment will be their greatest concern. The American Cancer Society has a volunteer program called Road To Recovery® that can help provide free transportation to and from treatment for people who have cancer and who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Patients need to call 1-800-227-2345 to register for this program.

Many volunteers decide to volunteer in honor or memory of someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. The Road To Recovery program provides transportation options for patients in these situations and currently needs volunteer drivers across northeastern PA, especially in Lackawanna County. We especially need drivers in these areas, Carbondale, Blakely, Olyphant, Scranton, Dunmore, Old Forge and Moosic. Drivers can drive locally in the county where they live. We also need drivers who will drive across county lines; longer distance drivers. Volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their cars so patients can receive the lifesaving treatments they need. Drivers also provide encouragement and support.

To volunteer: You need to be between 18 and 84. Have a valid driver’s license, a safe and reliable vehicle and proof of automobile insurance;have a good driving history; a clear background check, computer or Ipad access for online training. In Lackawanna County, you can use an ACS owned vehicle to give patient rides. Vounteer drivers arrange their own schedules and can commit to as many or as few hours as their schedule allows. Rides are provided during the week from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. We are also recruiting fill in volunteer Road To Recovery Coordinators who help schedule patient rides, you need to have computer and internet access and a few hours of week to schedule drivers. We are also recruiting individuals to be volunteer road to recovery driver recruiters, to help recruit retirees, folks who work part time, home makers, caregivers, and cancer survivors to encourage them to become volunteer drivers with this special program.
