HS FOOTBALL: Fahey Resigns As West Scranton Coach

BY JOBY FAWCETT, STAFF WRITER

Brian Fahey will resign from his position as head football coach at West Scranton High School today.

He made the announcement this season would be his last at the team’s end of the season dinner Sunday. Fahey coached at his alma mater for the last six seasons and compiled a record of 19-44.

West Scranton finished last season 1-9.

Fahey’s departure leaves three programs from the Lackawanna Football Conference with vacancies. Mid Valley and Montrose administrators are also looking for new head football coaches.

“I strongly believe that the ultimate job of the head coach is you want to set standards and create a buy-in to follow which includes being a good citizen, a good student, as well as building success,” Fahey said. “I just feel it is time, after six years, to give someone else an opportunity to create a more competitive football team in the area.

“I am hopeful for the program and the next coach.”

Fahey, a former standout player for the Invaders who also played at Lycoming College, cited a desire to spend more time with his family as a reason for his stepping down. He took over the program in 2014 after a long stay as the defensive coach at Abington Heights, where he assisted his close friend, Joe Repshis, and guided the Comets to five Lackawanna Football Conference Division I titles, four District 2 Class 3A championships and one District 2 Class 4A crown.

During his six seasons with the Invaders, Fahey, who is a special education teacher at West Scranton, led the team to the District 2 Class 4A semifinals in 2018 and a playoff appearance in 2016.

“Through this experience, I learned a lot and gained a new level of respect for the position of head coach and all of the responsibilities the job requires both on and off the field,” Fahey said. “I give a lot of credit to those who have done the job and done it well for a long time.

“I am extremely grateful for the players who worked hard for me and for the program and dedicated themselves to becoming a successful team, while also upholding our standards.”
