Free stuff, as promoted by Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, isn’t free. Rudyard Kipling’s “Gods of the Copybook Headings” is highly instructive, in the public domain due to age and worth reading by every voter.
Warren and Sanders want to cancel some or all student debt incurred during the pursuit of college degrees. Those of us who went to trade schools to learn real job skills, inexpensive community colleges to learn practical skills, or state universities like Penn State, are not interested in paying for the educations of those who choose pricey Ivy League schools and/or majors that do not qualify them for gainful employment. There is meanwhile a growing shortage of skilled trade workers who can often make more money than many college graduates today.
Warren and Sanders also support welfare and health care benefits for citizens of other countries who are in the United States illegally. We already have a huge federal deficit along with citizens, veterans and legal immigrants who are struggling to make ends meet. While no person should ever be denied emergency services regardless of his or her immigration status, our workers and taxpayers cannot afford to carry foreign nationals whose long-term well-being is the responsibility of their home countries.
If the Democratic Party expects voters to so much as look at its presidential candidate in 2020, it needs to nominate a Democrat instead of whatever it is Sanders and Warren represent.
