Our founding fathers did an excellent job writing our Constitution, but it was impossible for them to foresee ways in which our democracy would be weakened.
The influence of large dark money contributions for campaigns from corporations and Super PACs, as allowed by the Citizens United court case, is a major reason why legislators don’t listen to the feelings of the majority of the voters.
Another major weakness of our democracy are the challenges to voting faced by working people, seniors and members of the military who move often and have a difficult time keeping their registration up-to-date. There is no good reason why voters should have to wait hours in line to vote. We should make it easier to vote, not more difficult.
The For the People Act has been passed by the House of Representatives. Now it will go to the Senate. It would make voting more accessible for working people, ensure that politicians work for the people instead of special interest donors and it’d strengthen ethics laws that prevent politicians from enriching themselves.
Please contact U.S. Sens. Pat Toomey and Bob Casey and encourage them to pass this bill in the Senate. In the House, U.S. Reps. Dan Meuser and Fred Keller voted against it.
